The String Cheese Incident at Hornings Hideout

June 18-20, 2004

This was my first time to Hornings and it was absolutely incredible. All three nights were amazing with Saturday being the coup de grāce. Xavier Rudd started things off on Friday with some energetic tunage from down under and the thunderstorm that rolled in revved up the energy for the second half of his set. I missed most of Michael Franti & Spearhead (going to put on dry clothes), but caught the tail end which was fantastic. The energy was at a perfect pitch for the arrival of SCI, which they carried through to the finish of the night. There was a display of crystals on stage when Sound Tribe Sector 9 started off the musical festivities for Saturday night and the crowd was conducting the vibes like water. A short break ensued where the area in front of the stage was cleared and out came an impressive parade of dancing glo-stick sculptures. The the crowd was once again allowed into the arena and SCI came out for four incredible sets with jam after indescribable jam. The energy was so high and free-flowing you didn't want the night to end. At one point Michael Travis climbed over the gate and meandered through the first few rows of people. The music was my entire exsistence. Then came Sunday. And with Sunday came Keller Williams. This was the day I had been looking forward to all weekend and I was not disappointed. Keller opened the show with his most dedicated fans front and center (including myself). He jammed in a way that only he can. Then came a rousing round of mountain fiddle music from SCI. Then Keller was back on stage for crazy fantastic second set including Scott Law on guitar and Jamie Janover on Hammered Dulcimer. The night was well rounded out in the third set and nicely finished with "Could You Be Loved". I took me the better part of the following week to come down from the energy high of that weekend. This particular festival will be a definite repeater. I haven't been to many shows yet, but I have a feeling this will be one of, if not the most memorable show I have or will have ever attended.
